Your Questions, Answered
From muddy clothes to marshmallows, here’s everything parents usually ask before their first day in the woods.
🦌 About Forest School
What age range do you take?
We welcome children aged 5 to 10 as standard. It’s a large site with lots of different areas to explore, which is why it isn’t really suitable for younger children. Over 10s can stay on by arrangement - the regulars end up feeling like an extension of the family!
What actually happens at a Forest School session?
Children spend the session outdoors in our woodland, next to Windsor Great Park, doing child-led, hands-on activities: building camps and shelters, campfire time, nature walks, treasure hunts, arts and crafts with natural materials, mud kitchen, whittling, tree climbing, and plain old-fashioned outdoor play. Sessions are led by qualified Forest School practitioners and are about confidence, independence and connection to nature, with learning about the nature we see around us as we go.
Why is the location so special?
We’re neighbours to Windsor Great Park, a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest and Special Area of Conservation, and our own woodland has been in family stewardship since the 1960s, with the Forest School itself running since 2017. We actively support habitat conservation and biodiversity work as part of what we do, not just as a backdrop for sessions.
We manage the land to improve biodiversity and habitats for wildlife. Children are asked to look after nature, to avoid hurting insects, and to take pleasure in identifying bugs, birds and all the wildlife living here.
We ask everyone to clear up at the end of a session and leave the wood free of litter or camps. One thing we love giving children to take away is the habit of putting out water for wildlife to drink, in a shallow dish with a stone or two in it.
How many children are in a session, and what’s the staff ratio?
We keep groups small and deliberately family-feeling, 12 to 14 children, with a staff-to-child ratio of at least 1:7, sometimes lower. Our leaders are Level 3 Forest School qualified, and every member of the team is DBS-checked and first-aid trained.
Is Forest School just “playing outside,” or is there real learning happening?
Both, and that’s the point. We work on a risk-benefit basis, not risk-avoidance: children build real skills, risk assessment, problem-solving, teamwork, fine and gross motor skills, ecological knowledge, through child-led play rather than a desk-based curriculum. It doesn’t always look like learning, but it is. Children today often have fewer chances to play freely and creatively than they used to, and that’s exactly what happens here.
Is Forest School a screen-free environment?
Yes, completely! No phones, tablets or screens are part of a session, we promise the woods are far more fun anyway 😎
Can my child attend if they have additional needs (SEND)?
We want every child to have a good experience with us. Please talk to us before booking so we can understand your child’s needs and talk honestly about what support we can offer within a small team. No child is ever obliged to take part in any activity, and children can take their time to find their level and what they enjoy, we’ve seen children take a while to join in who then grow hugely in confidence here. The booking form asks whether your child has any medical needs or allergies - if so, we’ll send you a short form to fill in, and that comes with us on the day.
Can parents or carers stay and watch a session?
We ask parents to drop their children off, since we want to encourage independence and confidence away from a parent. If you’d like to stay a little while to help your child settle in, that’s absolutely fine, we’ll just gently encourage you to head off before too long. Our team is experienced at helping children settle in gently, at their own pace, there’s no pressure for a nervous child to join in immediately, and most children relax within the first half hour once they realise it’s a safe, welcoming place.
🗓️ Sessions, Timings & Booking
What does a session cost?
£48 per day. That includes access to our woodland site, small group sizes, experienced and qualified staff, all the tools and equipment used on the day, and the odd campfire treat too, toasted bread or marshmallows when we light one. Blacknest also carries public liability insurance, for your peace of mind.
What are your hours?
Our core session hours are 09:30 to 15:00, though winter sessions finish a little earlier, at 14:30. Exact hours are confirmed when you book, and again in the week leading up to your visit.
How do I book a place?
Sessions can be booked via the dates on our Book & Pay page, which show how many places are left on any given day. If the system won’t let you book a particular day, it’s full, but do email annemartin@blacknestforestschool.co.uk to join the waiting list, it often comes through. The booking page suggests a theme for the day, but please don’t rely on it completely, it’s often weather-dependent and always child-led, so we do our best rather than promise a fixed plan.
What’s your cancellation and refund policy?
| Notice given | What you get back |
|---|---|
| 5 or more full working days before | Full refund, less a £6 admin fee per child |
| Fewer than 5 full working days, illness included | No refund, though you’re welcome to arrange privately for a friend to take the place, just let us know |
If we’re the ones who need to cancel, for extreme weather, say, you’ll always be offered an alternative date or a full refund if you prefer.
Can I drop off early or collect late?
Early drop-off may be possible by arrangement, so do ask when you book. Unfortunately, we’re not able to offer late collection - the site must be cleared promptly at the end of the published session time. If you’re ever unavoidably delayed, please text us as soon as you can.
Who can collect my child?
Grandparents or other family members are very welcome to do the taxi run instead of you - just let us know in advance, and again at drop-off, who’ll be collecting, and we may ask them for a password you’ve agreed with us.
How do I pay?
You’ll book your place online, then we’ll email you our bank transfer details. Your place isn’t secured until we’ve received payment and advised you via email.
If payment is outstanding, we’ll send a couple of friendly reminders but do need payment within 7 days of booking - after that we’ll need to release the place to another family.
Do you accept Tax-Free Childcare, childcare vouchers, or HAF (Holiday Activities and Food) funding?
We’re unfortunately unable to accept Tax-Free Childcare, childcare vouchers or HAF funding, but do ask us about costs directly, we will endeavour to help large families in genuine need where we can.
Can I move my child’s booking to a different date instead of cancelling?
Yes. Please let us know as soon as possible. With 5 or more full working days’ notice, we can simply move you to another date, subject to availability. With less notice than that, please contact us directly to see if we’re able to accommodate a swap.
Is there a taster session for children who’ve never done Forest School before?
We don’t offer taster or trial sessions - most families find us through a friend’s recommendation, and we hope you’ll trust us to give your child a brilliant day.
If you’re ever anxious about how your child’s getting on during their first session, just ask, we’re happy to call you partway through the day to let you know how they’re settling in.
🧥 Clothing
Expect to get mucky!! A good day at Forest School usually means your child comes home covered in mud, so send them in things you genuinely don’t mind getting filthy and the rest looks after itself.
What should my child wear?
Yes please
- Old clothes you don’t mind getting very mucky.
- Trousers or leggings rather than shorts, they protect little legs from brambles and scrapes far better.
- Long sleeves and layers, they cover arms against brambles, nettles and insect bites, and come off easily if it warms up.
- Trainers, our default footwear, or wellies if it’s been especially wet the day before.
- A warm hat, gloves and thick socks, once the colder months set in.
No thanks
- Shorts, save them for the garden, trousers and leggings do a much better job out here.
- Sandals or “smart” shoes, neither copes with woodland terrain.
Never
- School uniform or “nice” clothes you’d mind seeing muddy.
- Frilly nylon skirts, capes and accessories, they’re a genuine fire hazard around our campfire, so please save them for another day.
🎒 What to Bring
What should be in my child’s bag, besides clothing?
- A full water bottle, there’s always the chance to refill it during the day.
- A packed lunch and any snacks, with no nuts please, see Do we need to bring a packed lunch?
- Sun cream - please apply an 8-hour protection cream before drop-off, and send a labelled bottle in the bag too. Staff can supervise your child reapplying it if needed, as long as it’s clearly named.
- Any regular or emergency medication your child needs, see My child takes regular medication, can staff administer it?
Do we need to bring a packed lunch?
Please bring a packed lunch and an extra snack or two. We always stop for a snack mid-morning, and children sometimes eat part of their lunch then too, that’s completely fine, just pack enough for a full day outside.
Please don’t pack anything containing nuts. We ask that no nut products come to Blacknest at all, whether or not your own child has an allergy, to keep everyone safe.
Children generally eat when they’re hungry rather than at a fixed time, so a lunch that’s easy for your child to manage independently helps.
If the weather’s too rough to eat outside comfortably, we’ll eat together in an outdoor shelter, or go into the cabin if it’s really cold or wet.
We don’t provide food for regular sessions, but we do sometimes do campfire cooking, like toast on the fire!
Can my child bring their own knife or tools for whittling and fire-lighting?
We provide all the tools needed for whittling, fire-lighting and similar activities, used only under staff supervision and after age-appropriate safety teaching. If your child’s a Blacknest regular and loves whittling with their own knife, please speak with us directly in case we are able to accommodate.
Can my child bring toys, phones, or other items from home?
We’d generally ask that valuable or precious items, and phones, given we’re a screen-free environment, stay at home, the woodland isn’t kind to electronics. Please don’t send small or precious toys either, they’re very easily put down and lost in leaf litter, and it’s too large a site to go looking for things at the end of the day.
Should I label everything?
Yes, absolutely, coats, water bottles, lunch boxes, even individual wellies. Named items make it far easier for us to reunite the right coat with the right child.
☔ Weather
Do you run all year round, in all weather?
Yes! Forest School happens in all seasons and, within reason, all weather. Rain, wind and cold are part of the experience, not a reason to cancel, see What counts as bad enough weather to cancel a session? On days of heavy rain, we can retreat to the cabin to dry off, warm up and have a hot chocolate.
What counts as bad enough weather to cancel a session?
We run in rain, wind, cold and heat as standard, Forest School is designed for all-weather play, and we have a permanent outdoor shelter as well as our cosy cabin to retreat to. We would only cancel or curtail a session for genuinely dangerous conditions, using our own risk assessment on the day. We don’t go into the woods if wind is forecast above 40mph. If we do need to cancel, see What’s your cancellation and refund policy?
What happens in really hot or really cold weather?
We adjust the day: more shade, more water breaks and less running about in the heat; more movement-based activities and hot drinks in the cold, and use of the cabin or shelter as a warm-up base when needed.
Is it safe for my child to be around a campfire?
Yes, campfire activities are a core, carefully supervised part of Forest School, run under strict safety protocols by trained staff, with clear boundaries taught to the children from their very first session. Fire safety is treated as seriously as any other part of our risk management.
Are there ticks, nettles, or stinging insects in the woodland?
As with any woodland environment, yes, occasionally, we check for ticks as standard practice, and teach children to recognise and avoid nettles and other plants to leave alone. It’s important they learn which plants are safe, so we teach “no pick, no lick” from day one. We carry appropriate first aid for stings and bites, and please let us know about any specific sensitivities your child has. We’d also recommend giving your child a quick once-over at bath time that evening, especially around the hairline, behind the ears and in any skin folds. If you do find a tick, remove it promptly with a tick removal tool (available from chemists) and apply antiseptic, and speak to your GP if a rash or flu-like symptoms appear in the following few weeks.
🧺 Food, Drink & Allergies
Can my child eat food other children bring, or share snacks?
We don’t encourage food sharing. We’d ask that children only eat what’s been packed for them by their own parent or carer, both for allergy safety and general hygiene. And remember, no nut products at all, please, see Do we need to bring a packed lunch?
My child has a food allergy or intolerance. What should I do?
Just answer yes to the medical question on the booking form and we’ll send you a short form to fill in - and please mention it again in person at drop-off. If your child carries an EpiPen or other emergency medication, see My child takes regular medication, can staff administer it? To keep everyone safe, we ask all parents to avoid sending any nut products at all, whether or not your own child has a nut allergy, see Do we need to bring a packed lunch?
🚻 Toilets & Personal Care
Are there toilets on site?
Yes, in the cabin. Plenty of children are happy doing a “wild wee” out in the woods, and anyone who’d rather use the toilet just says so, no fuss either way. We prompt toilet trips at break time and lunchtime as standard, and hand-washing or sanitising is encouraged before anyone eats.
My child isn’t fully toilet-trained yet, is that okay?
Children do need to be toilet-trained before joining us. Accidents happen sometimes, and we handle them calmly.
🛡️ Health, Safety & Supervision
What safety measures are in place?
Safety is a priority. Our leaders are Level 3 Forest School qualified, all staff are DBS-checked and trained in first aid and outdoor safety, and we carry out regular risk assessments of the woodland environment. Our safeguarding and health & safety policies, and our full handbook of policies, are available on request if you’d like to see them in advance.
Will my child get cuts, scrapes or bruises?
Sometimes, yes, and that’s honest, not alarming. Climbing, exploring and using real tools under supervision comes with the occasional minor bump, the same as any active outdoor play. We weigh up the benefits of that kind of play against the risks constantly (risk-benefit assessment, not risk-avoidance), and we’ll always tell you at pick-up about anything that happened.
What happens if my child gets hurt during a session?
Our trained staff carry a first aid kit at all times and will treat minor injuries on the spot. For anything more serious, we’ll contact you immediately using the details you gave us at booking, and call emergency services if needed, though we’ve never had to do this. Please make sure your contact details are correct from the time you make your booking, including if the responsible person on the day isn’t you.
My child takes regular medication, can staff administer it?
We’re not able to administer complex medication, or medication that needs to be given at a very precise time. Please talk to a member of staff on arrival about any medical issue.
If your child needs an inhaler, EpiPen or other emergency medication, please hand it to a member of staff at drop-off, clearly labelled with your child’s name and dose. It stays with our first aid kit all day and comes back to you at pick-up.
What if my child is feeling unwell on the morning of a session?
Please keep them home if they’re unwell, feverish, or have been sick or had diarrhoea in the preceding 48 hours, both for their comfort and to avoid passing anything on to the group.
Please let us know by email or text as early as possible so we can plan the day.
Will you take photos of my child?
We love capturing muddy, happy moments - busy hands, wellies in puddles, dens taking shape. Any photos we share, with families or on our website and social media, are taken from behind or at a distance, so children’s faces are never clearly shown, and we never add names.
If you’d rather we didn’t publish any photos of your child, just tick the opt-out box on the booking form.
🏅 Behaviour
What ground rules do children have to follow?
Three simple ones underpin everything we do: look after yourself, look after each other and look after the woodland. From these come the practical rules around fire, tools and tree climbing that every child is taught from their very first session, and which our staff talk through with the group regularly, not just once. We also ask children to be mindful of their language while they’re with us, including a few common exclamations we’d rather they didn’t use here.
What if my child doesn’t want to take part in an activity?
That’s absolutely fine, no child is forced to join an activity they don’t want to do. Part of the Forest School ethos is child-led play, so there’s always something else on offer and gentle encouragement rather than pressure.
How do you handle disagreements or difficult behaviour between children?
We use calm, consistent, age-appropriate approaches focused on understanding and resolving conflict rather than punishment. We’ll always let you know at pick-up if something significant happened during the day.
🎂 Parties & Special Occasions
Can we book a birthday party at Blacknest Forest School?
Yes, we host woodland birthday parties, for ages 5 to 13, up to 15 children. Parties run for 3 hours and include woodland games, den-building, and a campfire with toasted marshmallows, birthday cake and a round of Happy Birthday around the fire. We just ask you to bring the party spread yourselves, the cake, food, drinks, plates, napkins and anything else you’ll need, and we’ll look after the woodland, the games and the campfire magic. On the day, you’re welcome to serve the food yourselves, or our team can lend a hand.
How do we book and how much does a party cost?
Parties are arranged individually with Anne. Contact her directly at annemartin@blacknestforestschool.co.uk for availability, exact pricing and to talk through what you’d like. There’s more about parties on our Book & Pay page
📍 Getting Here
How do I find you?
Blacknest Forest School, SL5 0PT, is located opposite the Blacknest Gate into Windsor Great Park, on Blacknest Gate Road. Once you’re at Blacknest Gate, go up the private road opposite and immediately turn right onto a stony path, the cabin will be visible ahead of you. Parking is available on site for dropping off and collecting, and drop-off runs as a one-way loop, so please follow the path round, it brings you back out onto the road rather than needing to reverse or double back. You’ll find a map and directions on our Contact page
Is the site accessible for buggies, wheelchairs, or children with mobility needs?
Unfortunately not. The terrain is uneven, with plenty of roots and brambles underfoot, so it can be a genuine challenge for buggies, wheelchairs or anyone with limited mobility.
Do you have a phone number we can call?
Call or text Anne on 07739 199900 - text is best, as we’re out in the woods most of the day and can’t always pick up. Email works well too, and this FAQ page is designed to answer most questions before you need to.
We’re often deep in the woods with our hands full, so a text is usually the quickest way to reach us, and we’ll always call you straight away if we need you.
🐌 The Odd-But-Genuine Questions
A few honest answers to things parents actually wonder but sometimes feel silly asking.
Will my child come home smelling of campfire smoke?
Almost certainly, yes, and most parents tell us it’s one of their favourite smells by the end of the season. It washes out.
What if it snows, do you still run sessions?
Usually yes, snow is one of the most magical Forest School days there is, provided conditions underfoot and among the trees are safe. Please dress even more warmly than usual and check for any updates from us on snow days.
Are there spiders, snakes, or anything that bites in the woods?
You might well spot the odd spider, grass snake or biting insect out here, it’s a UK woodland, after all, though nothing here is dangerous. Our staff know the local flora and fauna well, and are quick to turn a sighting into a learning moment rather than a scare.
If a bite or sting does happen, our trained staff carry first aid kits and know how to treat it on the spot, and we’ll always let you know at pick-up, with a call to you straight away for anything more serious.
