Real Woodcraft, Wild Play and Room to Grow
What your child actually does at Blacknest, and how it helps them grow - in their own words, and ours.
Forest School Activities
Here’s a flavour of what a typical Forest School day includes - real woodcraft skills, hands-on nature discovery, and plenty of unhurried free play, all in the warm, close-knit atmosphere Blacknest is known for.
Exploring Nature
Guided walks and hands-on discovery - pond dipping, hunting for treasures, following winding trails and getting to know every hidden corner of our woodland.
Building Camps & Shelters
From simple forts to proper shelters, children pick up real woodcraft skills while building their own cosy hideaway among the trees.
Campfire Activities
Stories, songs and toasted treats around the fire - a Forest School tradition, and always a highlight of the day.
Treasure Hunts
Clue-led adventures through the woodland, with a new discovery around every corner.
Arts & Crafts
Natural materials become their own creative masterpieces, from woodland collages to seasonal decorations.
Learning About Wildlife
Our woodland is bursting with life - animals, reptiles, birds, bugs and plants. Bug hunts, bird spotting and peeking under logs help children get to know them all, and how we help their homes thrive.
Playing Games
Classic outdoor games alongside nature-inspired challenges - there’s rarely a quiet moment.
Picnic Lunches
Bring a packed lunch to enjoy outdoors, or in our cosy cabin if the weather’s too challenging.
Whittling
Choose the perfect stick, then whittle and decorate it - with proper whittling knives for older children and safety knives for the younger ones. Plenty of finished creations make it home!
Mud Kitchen
A firm favourite - mixing, pouring and “cooking” with mud, water and whatever nature provides, with plenty of pots, pans and imagination.
Fire-Lighting
Real woodcraft skills - striking a spark and understanding what it takes to get a fire going safely, always under close supervision.
Tree Climbing
Scrambling up trunks and finding the best perch - building strength, balance and a bit of healthy risk-taking, always well supervised.
Treasures They Take Home
Every child leaves with something they’ve made - simple, hand-crafted keepsakes from the day.

🌻 How We Help Them Grow
Forest School isn’t just play for play’s sake - it’s a genuine part of how children build confidence, creativity and resilience.
Confidence & Independence
Safe, supported risk-taking - building camps, navigating trails, working through team challenges - builds real confidence and problem-solving skills.
Creativity & Imagination
Surrounded by nature, children are free to invent, build and imagine - every day sparks something new.
Connecting with Nature
Learning about wildlife, habitats and sustainable living fosters a lasting appreciation for the natural world, right on the doorstep of Windsor Great Park.
Physical & Mental Wellbeing
Fresh air, active play and unhurried time outdoors are good for body and mind alike.
Safety First - the Foundation Everything Else Is Built On
Every activity is built on careful risk-benefit assessment. Our Level 3 qualified, DBS-checked team are trained in paediatric first aid and manage hazards continuously, so children can still climb, whittle and light fires safely. With a permanent outdoor shelter and our cosy cabin on site, rainy days go ahead too. Safety underpins everything we do, so your child is free to climb higher, dig deeper and get wonderfully muddy.
🎂 Birthday Parties
Celebrate in the woods - a private woodland party, whatever the weather.
There’s a permanent outdoor shelter for when the weather really turns, plus a cosy cabin close by, and plenty to do that doesn’t depend on sunshine: nature craft, storytelling by the fire, and games among the trees.

Every party is packed with woodland games, den-building, and a campfire with toasted marshmallows, before finishing with birthday cake and a round of Happy Birthday together around the fire.
Food, cake, drinks, plates and napkins are all down to you to bring along - we’ll take care of the rest.
