There is a lot of freedom and creativity at Forest School. Child-led activities are core to Forest School learning.

Welcome

On arrival in the wood, we make sure everyone knows each other’s names and we remind ourselves of the few simple safety rules. We talk about what things the children would like to do and what we have planned (it can’t be all about marshmallows!).

Campfire Activities

Gathered around the campfire, children bond over stories, songs and delicious treats, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie; a Forest School tradition!

Exploring Nature

Guided by our experienced team, children embark on exciting nature walks, discovering hidden treasures and observing the wonders of the forest.

Treasure Hunts

Embark on thrilling treasure hunts, where every clue leads to a new adventure and discovery.

Playing Games

From classic outdoor games to creative nature-inspired challenges, there's never a dull moment!

Arts and Crafts

Get creative with natural materials, crafting beautiful masterpieces inspired by the forest's bounty.

Building Shelters

From simple forts to intricate shelters, children learn valuable survival skills while creating their own cosy hideaways amidst the trees.

Conservation Skills

We help the children discover what they can do to protect the natural world in a time of major loss of biodiversity/nature. That is a priority for us to show what measures we all can take. We also teach knots and whittling.

Reflection

At the end of the session we review using simple, open questions such as, “What did you most enjoy? What did you find out that you didn’t know before? Each person contributes. It is a great time to share and hear what the children have to say or show.

We usually have groups of 12 or less who spend 5 – 6 hours on forest school holiday programme activities.

The ideal age group is 5-9 years (with exceptions for siblings just under 5 years and some 10 year olds still love coming). We are out in the woods the entire time, though the log cabin is used in exceptionally wet weather (and has toilet facilities).

Many children come regularly so are familiar with the geography and look both for the places they love and the fun of exploring somewhere new.

The site has several areas of play and special interest – tree house, swings, pond, “jungle gym”, “Eagle nest” – to mention just a few. Climbing and exploring opportunities abound in a safe environment. Children learn to tackle risks, to decide for themselves what is fun and interesting, to cooperate with others and grow in confidence.
