The enormous kingdom of Fungi – is truly astonishing.

Fungi are an essential part of our underground eco system. This year we have been blown away by the numbers and variety of fungi on my land.

The Forest School leaders, Julie, Sarah and Alison have produced a brilliant resource of photographs of at least 35 varieties found by the children on the land. The children then go on fungi foray and get really excited at how many types they found. And hopefully we can help them understand what an amazing function they perform for enriching the soil and feeding the plants and trees. And they create an important food source for many of our mammals and insect species as well.

It brought into focus the importance of my small piece of land which A Rocha UK considered to be important enough to make me a Partner in Action in 2020. I want to be in the 7% of woodland in the UK considered to be in an ecological good state.
Finding so many species of fungi is a good indicator of the health of the woodland (A Rocha head of conservation, Andy Lester, believes there are probably 70 – 80  species here).

Action we all can take – Identifying and valuing all the different fungi. That has to be encouraging.

The context for this is the alarming State of Nature report 2023 published in September which reports on the significant loss of plants, animals, birds, and fungi. “The UK is now one of the most nature-depleted countries on Earth”.

We had a great half term with maximum numbers every day of the week. Apart from discovering the amazing display of fungi, they climbed, dug, made fun crafts, carved pumpkins and enjoyed health-giving time in nature.
